Dermoscopy for melanocytic nevi (Nurse)

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to dermoscopic assessment of melanocytic nevi in primary care. Participants learn to distinguish common benign nevi, recognise dermoscopic patterns, identify atypical features, and determine when monitoring or excision is required. Through high-quality dermoscopic images, practical explanations, and evidence-based guidance, the course builds confidence in evaluating junctional, dermal, compound, blue, Spitz and Reed nevi. It also covers the principles of short-term monitoring and the early detection of melanoma. The course supports safer clinical decision making, reduces unnecessary excisions, and strengthens diagnostic accuracy in everyday general practice.

Unit 1 – Types of Acquired Melanocytic Nevi This unit introduces the biology and behaviour of melanocytic lesions and explains the differences between melanocytes and nevocytes. Participants learn how acquired nevi develop, the influence of genetics and UV exposure, and why distinguishing benign nevi from melanoma is essential to avoid unnecessary excisions. The unit describes junctional, dermal and compound nevi, along with blue, Spitz, Reed and halo nevi, supported by detailed dermoscopic images and clinical examples.

Unit 2 – Dermoscopic Features of Acquired Melanocytic Nevi This unit explores key dermoscopic patterns including pigment network, globules, streaks and blue-white structures. Participants learn how these patterns correlate with underlying histology and how to recognise typical versus atypical features. The unit covers junctional, dermal and compound nevi in depth, explains the optical basis of colour changes, and highlights features that may mimic melanoma. Clinical videos and cases illustrate how pattern recognition supports confident diagnosis.

Unit 3 – Atypical Melanocytic Lesions This unit focuses on lesions that appear melanocytic but display asymmetry or atypical structures that make immediate diagnosis uncertain. Participants learn how to distinguish nevi from early melanoma using structure, symmetry and comparison with surrounding lesions. The unit explains when excision is appropriate and introduces the concept of short-term monitoring for unclear lesions. A practical case demonstrates how stability over time confirms benign behaviour.

Unit 4 – Monitoring Atypical Melanocytic Lesions This unit provides an evidence-based framework for short-term dermoscopic monitoring, including recommended time intervals, safety considerations and criteria for when monitoring is inappropriate. Participants learn how to document lesions, compare baseline with follow-up images, and identify significant changes suggestive of early melanoma. Real case examples demonstrate stability versus progression, while caution is emphasised for nodular, blue or rapidly changing lesions. The unit also clarifies the differences between short-term monitoring in low-risk patients and long-term surveillance in high-risk individuals.

Relevance to Nurses:

Nurses play an important role in skin cancer prevention, early detection and ongoing patient care. Developing knowledge and skills in skin assessment and melanography can support the recognition and monitoring of suspicious lesions, patient education and documentation, while contributing to collaborative care and timely management of patients with skin cancer concerns.

Professor John Paoli

This course is presented by Professor John Paoli.

Professor John Paoli is Head of the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden). His research group focuses on the early diagnosis of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers using dermoscopy, novel imaging techniques and machine learning as well as optimal management of these tumors using medical, destructive and surgical treatment modalities. He is also a consultant dermatologist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital where he leads the Mohs Surgery Center. He is the Administrative Coordinator of the International Dermoscopy Society, the Treasurer and Past President of the European Society of Micrographic Surgery, the President of the Swedish Society of Dermatologic Surgery and Oncology and a former Board member of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. He has also been the President of the Nordic Dermatology Association and the Swedish Society of Dermatology and Venereology. Lastly, he runs several Nordic courses within the fields of dermoscopy and dermatological surgery for dermatologists and primary care physicians.

What your colleagues say

"I would recommend this course as an important addition to self-directed learning in dermatoscopy. It was an invaluable course to gain the diagnostic tools, knowledge and confidence in managing skin cancer. The course was professionally conducted with excellent presentations."

"Excellent! This is a great course that has helped me diagnose many more subtle, early skin cancers especially melanoma in situ. The course was clearly presented, with good pictures and course book. All HealthCert's skin cancer courses have been hugely valuable to my practice!"

- R. Mundell Nurse

"An excellent course introduction to dermoscopy and relating what you see to the histopathology and applying this in clinical practice. Great lectures and supporting materials."

- S. Jan Nurse

"I really enjoyed the level of learning. It is very rewarding to know that I am potentially saving lives. Recently I volunteered with the Lions Cancer Institute for two days, and we screened 158 patients, detected 38 possible melanomas and 83 keratinocyte skin cancers. It was a very successful and rewarding two days, and something I could do confidently because of my learning from this course."

"I highly recommend this course. I increased my knowledge and developed confidence in using dermoscopy and in diagnosing melanoma and other skin lesions. Every skin lesion I see means so much more now that it has a name. Great involvement from various skin cancer experts and great videos and reference materials."
